E.L. Trouvelot
É.L. Trouvelot was a French artist, astronomer, and amateur entomologist unfortunately remembered for introducing the Gypsy Moth to North America—one of the most damaging pests in the U.S. His interest in astronomy was sparked in the 1870s when he began observing and sketching magnificent auroras. This digital collection draws upon the materials selected for an exhibition called “Seeing is Believing” held in the NYPL from 1999 to 2000 (NYPL). These are just some of Trouvelot’s spectacular astronomical illustrations, coming from a collection of nearly 7000 that he produced during the course of his life.
