Frederic Remington was an American painter, sculptor, illustrator, and writer who, in the late 19th century, depicted the Old American West in in each medium. Remington saw wide success during his lifetime and his pioneering style of detailing human and animal figures while de-emphasizing landscape gave rise to the group of contemporaneous illustrators’ sobriquet, “School of Remington.” Before Eadweard Muybridge, Remington accurately depicted his favorite subject, the horse in motion, with all legs in air simultaneously, which was soon adopted by nearly all Western horse painters. While many in the 1890s understood the camera as a perfect descriptor, Remington’s understanding of the camera’s place in visual art was ahead of its time; he said, “the artist must know more than the camera … [the artist must] incorrectly drawn from the photographic standpoint [to achieve the desired effect].”
