Juan de Juanes was a Spanish Renaissance painter in the 16th century. Deeply religious, de Juanes never painted until he received his Sunday communion, and stuck mostly to Biblical scenes. He used painting as a means of religious reflection and contemplation, often fasting and praying while working. De Juanes’ father was a painter, and his son and two daughters continued the family profession.
