The German painter Paula Modersohn-Becker was one of the most significant figures of early Expressionism. Although she had a brief career, cut short by an embolism at age 31, she created a body of revolutionary work that was bold and intense in both color and subject. She is recognized as the first female artist to paint female nudes and, along with Picasso and Matisse, she introduced Modernism to the world at the beginning of the 20th century.
