Photography began with the introduction of the daguerreotype in 1839. The development of the instantaneously captured image brought with it notions of photographic truth, documentation of the ephemeral, and visual testimony to experience. In the years since the daguerreotype, the photographic medium has reinvented itself many times over with the advents of film, digital, Photoshop, and finally social media—blurring the lines between professional and amateur, documentation and fiction.
