Waiting for the Greyhound

Just 22 when she took this set of pictures of the Greyhound bus depot in Indianapolis, Indiana, Esther Bubley’s passion for documentary photographs began while she was still at high school.

Trained as a photographer, she quit a position at Vogue when she found the work not to her taste. Eventually she found her home under the tutelage of Roy Stryker at the Office of War Information. This image is one of many that Bubley took documenting much of the US bus system. She became one of the first professional women freelance photographers.
