Jan van Eyck was known as one of the most significant painters of the Northern Renaissance in the fifteenth century. His works - of both secular and religious subject matters - were highly praised during his career, and his role as a painter in the court of Philip the Good established him as a successful and well-regarded artist of his time. His most well-known work, the Ghent Altarpiece, was and still is regarded as one of Northern Europe’s finest masterpieces.
