Scenes From Manzanar

In 1941, Dorothea Lange was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for achievement in photography due to her documentary photographs of the American social scene. At the turn of the year, Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor, initiating the internment of Japanese Americans. Lange responded quickly, giving up her award in favor of joining the War Relocation Authority to document the mass evacuation of Japanese Americans who were sent away without legal jurisdiction. These photographs, archived by the National Archive and Records Administration, give a small insight into the lives of the evacuees during their mass incarceration.
