Educated at MIT and admitted to the prestigious Boston Art Club as a teenager, Charles Herbert Woodbury purchased five acres of prime Ogunquit, Maine real estate in 1896. By 1898 he’d used them to build an artist’s school, where he’d teach, on and off, until his death in 1940. Woodbury’s work in Maine would help turn the small coastal town into an artistic force to be reckoned with. At one point or another it saw the likes of Robert Henri, George Bellows, and Leon Kroll.

His work is known today for his quick brushstrokes, evoking the ephemerality of nature without ever missing its inherent beauty.
